Arnold's trumpet concerto, composed in 1981 and performed by James Fountain, is an ebullient work and was given its debut performance by the late John Wallace. This is a challenging work to perform, but it is very rewarding and is typical of Walton in semi-serious mood.
The orchestra first performed this work a few years ago and the players are relishing the prospect of playing it again. Manuel de Falla's Three Cornered Hat is a ballet from 1919 adapted from an earlier pantomime of his, written at the request of Diaghilev. It features Spanish folk and dance music - which de Falla then adapted into a couple of orchestra suites, the second of which will feature in this concert. The first half opens with an orchestral fanfare in the form of Walton's Crown Imperial; a grand statement of British pomp and circumstance and a great way to commence the orchestra’s new season!
