An irresistible celebration of English music as ‘the most exciting conductor working in Britain today’ (Daily Telegraph) performs for the first time in York with his hand-picked orchestra. Presented by the Ryedale Festival, this richly varied afternoon concert offers a panorama of national imagination, from pastoral lyricism to sparkling wit and the sheer pleasure of a great tune.
The programme opens with one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most famous overtures, from The Yeomen of the Guard, before moving into the hushed, dreamlike beauty of Delius’s Walk to the Paradise Garden. At the heart of the concert is Vaughan Williams’s beloved The Lark Ascending, partnered by music of tenderness and charm from Elgar, including Chanson de Matin and Chanson de Nuit. Walton’s Spitfire Prelude and Fugue brings its distinctive dash and colour, while Richard Rodney Bennett’s Summer Music adds a fresh modern voice to this English landscape.
